(Minimum 5 students) The Ainu traditional craft community at Lake Akan has produced many wonderful works of art, such as wood carvings. This class offers visitors a chance to experience woodcarving while learning about these traditional techniques. A master woodcarver of the Ainu Kotan will provide easy-to-understand instructions, and even first-timers will be able to create their own woodcarving. We also provide fun and rewarding programs for study groups and school field trips. ✱ Please take your woodcarving as a souvenir. ✱ Reservations are required for this class.

Get Close to Ainu Culture Embroidery

(Minimum 5 students) This class allows you to experience Ainu traditional pattern embroidery, a heritage which has been passed unbroken from mother to child since long ago. These patterns were first developed to ward off evil spirits. Female instructors from the Ainu Kotan will provide easy-to-understand instruction, and even first-timers will be able to create their own embroidery. Your highly-experienced instructor will start from the basics, to create an interesting and rewarding lesson. You will make an original coaster, which is yours to keep as a memento of this experience. ✱ Reservations are required for this class.

The Sound of Traditional Ainu Instrument Mukkuri Resounds over Lake Akan  Mukkuri Class

(Available for groups of 15 or more) The mukkuri (mouth harp) is a traditional musical instrument of the Ainu people. In this class, you will learn the basics of how to play this instrument, as well as how to create sounds of nature such as raindrops, bear cub cries, and blowing wind. You will also enjoy a demonstration of the mukkuri's rich range of expression, including human emotions such as the sigh of a maiden in love. You may also take home your mukkuri as a souvenir. ✱ Please take mukkuri lessons in combination with other classes. On the left is a new-style mukkuri, which does not use a string, and can be easily played with the hand. On the right is a traditional mukkuri, which will be used in this lesson. Please take your mukkuri with you as a souvenir.

The Ainu are the indigenous people of Japan, with their own culture and way of living in coexistence with nature. This lecture is aimed at passing on the long-preserved spirit and history of the Ainu people, and telling of their living culture, to future generations.(As a set with Ancient Ceremonial Dance or Activity)
