A festival offering thanks and respect to Lake Akan’s red salmon

The Red Salmon Festival, “Kapatcep Nomi”, is a festival to remind local people that red salmon are native to Lake Akan, and to express gratitude and respect to the red salmon and all the other spirits of nature in Lake Akan.

The event is held every July at venues around the Akan Lakeside and is based on the Ainu tradition of kamuynomi. The event is host to an exciting reenactment of traditional Ainu fishing and red salmon fishing in dugout canoes. Highlights include traditional Ainu clothing and Ainu ancient ceremonial dance.
