Traditional artwork by up-and-coming artisans

Traditionally, Ainu boys learned woodcarving and girls learned embroidery and weaving until they reached adulthood. Wood carvings and embroidered pieces are adorned with beautiful Ainu patterns, which are made with gratitude and respect for nature and are said to possess certain meanings that can ward off evil spirits or give protection.

The beautiful Ainu patterns have received much praise from around Japan and beyond. At the Akanko Ainu Kotan, the artisans have created a series of fresh new styles while taking inspiration from the ideas and culture passed down by their predecessors.
Here are some Ainu artisans who create wood carvings and embroidery with delicate Ainu patterns that showcase their skilled artistry.
